Opinion: Choices for Change - Careful What You Wish For

The saying “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t” comes to mind when I think about our upcoming school board election. I, too, have been frustrated by some of the recent goings-on at Saucon Valley Schools. This letter isn’t to get into that, but to address if we really think these new candidates will bring the “change” we are looking for.

I think back to the public panel held before last election and the fact that Demko and Broun claimed to be more than happy to mandate masks and vaccines and thwart our education in the name of the “pandemic.” I think we’re all happy that is over and hope that we don’t have to revisit any of those situations again, but I have to wonder, “what if?”

They’d surely love to close schools to “protect our teachers.” Demko, after all, led contract negotiations for our teacher’s union for quite some time. Seems to me like a conflict of interest to have her now representing our taxpayers. Santos and Carpenter appear to be level-headed parents which I can respect. I just wonder how much experience and time they have to offer.

Having paid close attention to school board meetings over the past few years, I did not see them in attendance or involved closely in any parent committees. These candidates have all been eager to express their disdain for school board and leadership decision making but all their rhetoric has failed to introduce any solution.

That leads me to Broun, who may be the scariest one of all. What exactly is his agenda? He comes off as extremely combative and in an article he wrote for a local blog two years ago said “I’m a bit of a bystander in this…. I send my kid to Catholic school and I don’t frankly give a damn about the Saucon Valley schools’ brand.” This sounds like an angry troll without a vested interest who prefers to complain than to get the job done.

And if you have followed Broun’s social media outbursts the past few years, he’s done just that. COMPLAIN. All while sending his kid elsewhere. He posted in 2022 regarding anyone of opposing political views, “Are people stupid? Are they gullible? Are they mentally ill? Are they cynically spreading a dangerous lie that has already led to people’s deaths?”

I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t seem like a candidate that is willing to hear all sides of heavy issues or even think rationally. Time and time again he has shown nothing but disrespect and hysterical, irrational anger at anyone who thinks differently and believes in limited government intervention. Just what is his agenda? All this being said, it concerns me that any “level-headed” individual would want to hitch their wagon to these candidates, and most particularly Demko and Broun.
